The interview this week involved rating different attributes as either more masculine or feminine. Our society tends to look at things very black and white. Boys are a certain way, and girls are another. Our socialization implants in our minds what we associate with being masculine or feminine. However, men and women can have many of the same attributes. This interview showed how we view different behaviors as gender specific. My interviewee seemed to be pretty open-minded, rarely giving any one trait a score of 100% masculine or feminine. It was interesting though that "strong" traits such as being independent and "willing to take risks" were thought of as mostly masculine to us. So called "weaker" traits such as being conscientious and yielding were almost completely feminine in our eyes. Why do women feel the need to stay in the background more and are more insecure with ourselves? Is this just ingrained in us from our society? It's hard to know, but the fact that both myself and my interviewee are women and we think of ourselves in that way says something.
