Mellott Sociology 131 Attendance Participation 10/6-10/8

Kalena Mellott

The way in which I see gender "done" in my daily life is the way in which many of my friends and I are very outspoken.  Sometimes this is socially accepted for us women to be outspoken and other times it is not.  While in a class and having a discussion it is often not looked at strangely that my friends and I are participating, giving opinions, or leading the discussion.  However, when I go to referee soccer games and have to tell the coach to stop yelling at us referees that are doing the game many of the coaches give me a look that says, "wow that audacity of this girl".  Many might think that it's not because I am a girl but it is  more because of the job, however, I have seen the same coach be respectful of the male referees who told him the same thing.  As females my friend and I were expected to take the verbal abuse without comment and it was expected of the male referees to say something.  This happens all the time and it is definitely all about gender.
