Sociology Weekly Participation October 7, 2014-Doing Gender

Kimberly Simonds

As a female, in my daily life, "going gender" means that I have to clean the house, wash the clothes, make the meals while juggling my hectic school schedule in the process. My "work" week is Monday through Sunday, and typically starts at 5:30 am to 11:30 pm. My husband works a full time job, from 6 am to 2:30 pm Monday through Friday. Once he arrives home, his day is complete. That is all he expects to do. Most of society sees that my schedule is not work. It is what a woman is "supposed" to do, minus the school situation. I strongly feel that it is sturdily accepted by society. I have seen couples where it is completely different and the roles are reversed. This is going against the grain in how gender is done. I hear the low whispers of how the man of the relationship needs to take the upper hand and have his significant other do the "womanly chores."
