The article discussed in our interview is titled "Gender Wage Gap Reflects the 'Ask' Gap" (link below).
Satya Nadella, the CEO of MicrosoftCorp., was asked to give advice to women uncomfortable with asking for pay raises. Nadella responded with, "It's not really about asking for the raise, but knowing and having faith that the system will actually give you the right raises as you go along." This comment received a lot of backlash from people stating that he was suggesting women remain submissive and take a back seat to men's pay. Nadella apologized and said it wasn't his intention to answer in that manner. He amended that if a person feels they deserve a raise then that person should definitely ask for one. The article detailed how women are less likely to ask for raises than their male counterparts and continued to discuss reasons why the wage gap continues to exist.
The person I interviewed believes the wage gap exists, though he was never seen it. He thinks that Nadella would be unfit to answer such a question as was posed to him because of his position as CEO. He cannot micromanage when he has umpteenth things to handle. The interviewee thinks that while Nadella didn't mean to sound insensitive to women's wage issues, he wasn't the best person to know the real problem with gender wage gaps.
