Peter Rice - Weekly Participation: Doing Gender

From the perspective of a man, I can say with confidence that I see plenty of other men "doing gender" on a daily basis. A perfect example of this is whenever I visit the gym at the rec center. Every time I go in there, the room reeks of ego. There are always plenty of people grunting and showing their manly side: it seems as if everyone is trying to outdo one another to prove themselves as the alpha. This is the case because society tells us that men have to be big and strong to be appealing. It creates an insecurity within a lot of people, driving them to push harder to become stronger. We all aspire to be the manly men portrayed on TV and through the media. Although this is difficult to achieve, our culture and out society tells us that having these manly traits is what makes us truly men. The media tells us that the best men are super handsome with dope abs.
