Weekly Participation
This week's weekly participation question that I chose was: How did your parents deal with the division of work and what were the consequences for both parties? In this interview, my respondent replied by saying that when his parents got married, it was his father who had the priority over the family. With him having the priority, it was the father's decision to put the company ahead of everything else. Even though the mother wanted to go on and pursue her own career, my respondent stated that she was forced to sacrifice it and tag alongside the husband, because he made more money than her. However, over time, my interviewee's father saw his company shut down, and the mother ended up working along the same business lines that the father was able to find. The changing point of power happened when my interviewee's father became sick to the point where he was no longer able to provide for his family the way he used to be. As a result, the respondent's mother became the person who brought in the most income and she worked her way up to becoming a registered nurse. Decisions of all kind now have to go through her rather than the father.
As for the consequences that both sides had to endure due to this division of work and this struggle for power, the interviewee's mother was always forced to put the father's best interests ahead of her own. Explaining that his family has always been very traditional, after the father was longer the main provider for the family, my interviewee's mother and family had to deal with some criticism from other family members. The interviewee explained that in a traditional family such as his, others look down on a woman who makes more than a man. That therefore presented a consequence of the division of labor present in that family and an obstacle that the interviewee and his family would have to overcome.
