In my interview I summarized an article to my respondent on the topic of gender and religion. In the article the writer discussed how critics against gay marriage, abortion, and women getting birth control are claiming that this is an attack against religious freedom. They argue that these things undermine religion and that business owners should be able to hire, fire, or refuse to do business with another for any religious reasons. However, the article points out the due to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the long-established principle of America shows that people should treat everyone equally. Furthermore, the author goes further and states that the real danger to religious freedom is when others try to force their beliefs onto others who do not share them. After being told about this article my respondent stated that she believed it was a very good article, and agreed with everything the author said. She said that these people who claim that their religious freedom is being targeted are doing nothing more than being discriminatory against others. When she was talking about how there are some business owners who refuse to offer birth control to their women employees she said that it wasn't fair and religion was just an excuse. If other businesses had to offer birth control then they did too. Also she claimed that people need to stop pocking their noses into other's business like abortion since it has nothing to do with the Church. She said that the decision to abort should be between the individuals involved and their own beliefs. Also, in regards to gay marriage she believes they should be left alone since they breathe the same air we do, drink the same water, and bleed red like everyone else. Overall she agreed with what the author wrote when she said that the real threat to freedom comes from those who try to force others to share their beliefs.
