Eskelsen Weekly Participation

This week's topic was gender and religion, and how gender inequality is perpetuated in religious institutions. I chose an article on the Weber State University website called "The Signpost" that was written by author Simon Furlong. His article, titled "LDS church has more work to do on gender equality," was in response to another article written by Madison Swenson titled "Mormon feminism not an impossibility." Furlong wrote that feminism is about economic, social, and cultural equality for women, not about allowing differences between men and women to be seen, as Swenson wrote. After summarizing the articles to my interviewee, she said that she agreed with Furlong's views of what feminism is and that, while women should have the same opportunities for advancement in religion as men do, there are still innate differences between men and women that should be appreciated in the religious sphere.
