Quintanilla

Cynthia Quintanilla

Does gender matter in your workplace?
The interviewee said she works in retail and both men and women share the work. Everyone unloads the delivery truck and everyone organizes. She has had a female manager and a male manager. There are a few differences though, she said that the male manager gave more of the work to men, she believes it is because her manager thought them more capable. Her female manager spread the work more evenly, expecting more from the women workers than did the male manager. The interviewee said that although all workers help unloading the delivery truck, only men get into the truck to throw boxes onto the belt. She said usually men (in exception of herself) throw the truck and women grab the boxes from the belt to organize them in the storage room. She also mentioned that the male manager seems reluctant to ask women for help, particularly when it relates to moving heavy items. The interviewee said that she doesn't need to work hard but rather work smart. She said that there ways to move an object that do not require brute strength, they simply require a smart way to move it.

The chapter discussed sex discrimination (as seen in the interviewee's story about given less tasks than men because her male manager saw them more capable) and sex segregation (like how only men throw the truck and women organize the delivery). The chapter also discussed sexual harassment and the wage gap. The interviewee did not mention salary or harassment.
