Class 5/11 Gender in workplace

Labit

The interviewee has experience when it comes to men and women being treated very differently in the work place. Working in the agricultural setting men and women are segregated from one another from the start. Different tasks are given to employees based on if they are a man or a woman. Certain jobs do require physical strength that the average woman would require more time or personnel to complete compared to men. The main reason given b the interviewee for the segregation was to deal with sexual harassment in the work setting. He stated most of the bosses were men. He did share a story when the boss was a woman at a flea market type situation. This didn't stop sexual segregation. The men were hired to do heavy lifting in unloading the trucks and the women were given the job of selling the product. He was an exception as he had a history with the boss and was trusted to work at the booth. He also said there was one woman he saw hired once. She was very big and strong as he recalls. He also shared a story of his own mother who was a single mother and took on jobs that were labeled as mens jobs and she was viewed, as any woman who did this, as more masculine.
