This week, we were asked to read articles on Google about gender and religion, and later conduct an interview with someone asking their opinions on the topic. I found an article on the Huffington Post about Mormon women being denied entrance to an all-male priesthood meeting. My interviewee was a seventh-day Adventist, so I asked her what her experience was with this, and if there were any similarities. She said that there were some similarities in the sense that many traditional Adventists disagree with having women as elders. In her church, things are slowly changing, and her mother was recently ordained as an elder. There exist many Adventist churches that do not allow this yet, but hopefully will with time. She believes that eventually, this practice will become more widely accepted, and women with find equality within churches. As far as the Mormon religion goes, it is hard to say. Only when their living prophet hears from God that women are to be treated equally, will things change. It seems as if the more traditionalist ideas found in many religions are slowly dying out, and women are granted more rights and better access in churches. As the time changes, standards in religion change as well.
