Brianne Wagner: gender inequality in the workplace
The interviewee and I discussed the work environments that we both work in. When I asked the respondent if she has experienced any sex segregation or gender inequality at her job. She described her position and her coworkers positions and explained how all of the people in the positions above her are male and have much more seniority and pay than she does. She also explained that the other people in the positions equal to her are paid more and one is a male but she explained that the only reason they are paid more is because they have more experience and more seniority. The interviewee also explained that occasionally the males expect her not to be able to do the work she is trained to do, such as heavy lifting. We both believed this to be an effect of the gender ideologies that society has projected upon people. Despite this, the respondent described her working environment as a place where there is not too much gender inequality other than what is done unconsciously.
