For this weeks participation I decided to read an article on google news that pertained to our chapter on religion and gender. The article I read talked about multiple religious groups petitions against the mayor of Houston, Texas who passed a law, without putting it to a vote, for citizen to allow males who identify female to use whichever restroom they choose. The ministers of the churches who participated in the petitions were subpoenaed and later the mayor withdrew these. I asked my interviewee how they felt about this and if the interviewee felt that religion should be taken into consideration when making laws and policies for the general society. My interviewee felt that there should have been a vote and that the mayor was in the wrong. However, the interviewee also felt that religion itself should not have an active role in creating policy. Individuals who are religious absolutely have the right to vote, petition, and create policy that can be brought to a vote, but religion should not necessarily be taken into consideration when making law.
